Performance Management System

Any healthcare organization with the desire to perform well in the eyes of patients, physicians, owners and employees must establish and implement a sound performance management system.

A performance management system has two major components: performance metrics, which are correctly deployed throughout the organization, and a corrective action system, used as a mechanism to change performance.

Establishing the performance management system is a task that should be taken seriously because it is the system itself that will drive behaviors in the organization. It is no secret that what gets measured gets results. Decisions about what will be measured, therefore, must be made carefully. In addition the bandwidth of the human mind and it ability to digest information must be accounted for, as psychological studies have indicated time and time again. Lastly, the current maturity with respect to managing a business to the numbers, and the ability of associates to derive corrective action using a data driven approach, must be taken into consideration.

The performance management system must be designed to lead the organization to the desired performance levels. This is accomplished via metrics design and metrics deployment in concert with goal setting for each organizational unit as established during the reengineering efforts. A process is taught to all associates to provide a method to identify gaps and determine root causes for performance gaps. The corrective action aspect of a performance management system leads associates to activities that eliminate root causes therefore driving performance in the desired direction.

Healthcare Excellence Institute offers workshops that allow your team to design and implement a comprehensive performance management system including scorecards and a corrective action system.
