Business Strategy Development

In order to overcome the challenges facing healthcare organizations, clear focus is an essential ingredient to success. Most organizations have ample talent at the associate level to face their challenges and move the organization to the next level of performance. In order to actualize this potential, however, associates must be supported by the development of a sound business strategy.

For associates to rise to the occasion, several key items must be provided by the leadership team. First and foremost, there must be trust and honest feedback about the state of the business. No organization can expect their associates to act in the organization’s best interest without the knowledge of the business reality. Secondly, goals and objectives must be clear and sensible. Goals may be stretch goals, but they must remain achievable with the appropriate effort and mechanisms. The third element that must be provided to the organization is a well-developed business strategy, including action plans, methods and tools so that goals and objectives become the outcome of deploying this strategy.

At the highest organizational levels the leadership team must confront reality and set a clear business development strategy. This direction must be communicated broadly. As part of this effort, the goals will be communicated and deployed by engaging the performance management system.

Goals should never be achievable by conducting business in a status quo matter, otherwise their validity should be questioned. This is the reason why the development of a business strategy becomes key. Strategy provides the organization with the platform upon which its goals will be achieved.

There are several key componentes to the development of a business strategy. One component is the Executive Strategy, often designed during an Executive Strategy Workshop. The second component is a platform for associates that contains the methods and tools to achieve the objectives. Examples of such platforms are Lean, Six Sigma, Lean Six Sigma and Operations Analysis.
